PHOTOS - 1927 @ The Palms

24 August 2012
The Palms @ Crown Casino
Melbourne, Australia

I had seen Aussie melodic rock legends 1927 a couple of times in the past 18 months, but without question tonights show was the best by far.  Admittedly the other occasions had seen the band performing in a much larger stadium, support the likes of Roxette at Rod Laver Arena for example, but tonight it seemed the band was exactly where they are best suited, in a more intimate setting, playing their own 90 minute headline show.

Combining both photgraphy and also review for May The Rock Be With You, I had the best of both worlds - an opportunity to get pretty close up for a 3 song photo snapping, then sit and relax on a sofa booth for the remainder of the show.  Not exactly the most comfortable sofa/booth I have sat on, but hey, it's better than standing up!

This was the first live show I had photographed since back in June, so it was great to blow away the cobwebs so to speak and get myself ready for a big bunch of shows coming up, the first being Slash today, in about 5 hours!

Lead singer Erik Weidemann was pretty lively during this set, which offered up some cool action shots.  Whilst I didn't take these photos in black and white in the camera, for some reason black and white was calling my name whilst I was sitting editing these shots.  I think it worked well in the end!

Being a hometown show for Calling All Cars, I rocked up to the Hi-Fi Bar on a wintery Melbourne, Friday night, expecting to be greeted by a reasonably packed house, so was somewhat amazed upon entry to find the Hi-Fi Bar pretty damn

Now here's one band I probably never anticipated getting the opportunity to photograph, heck, when The Darkness were last around, I don't think I even had ownership of an SLR.

Heading to Australia with barely a few months notice, The Darkness announced their arrival back on the scene in the best way possible...with a 20 song something set of classics plus a bevy of new tracks.  What amazed me mostly was the sheer fact that after their hiatus, they sold out 2 shows at a pretty large venue @ The Palace.

Neil Zlozower - Rock Photographer

For the website www.maytherockbewithyou.com, a couple of years ago now I had the pleasure of talking to one of the rock photographers who has had the biggest influence on me as far as photographers go...

“Even today I try and get things as 99% right as possible. Paul Stanley phoned me up to talk about doing the shoot for his solo album “Live To Win”. I said “Paul have you got a makeup artist you want to use?” and he goes “Neil I don’t need a makeup artist, we are going to get everything retouched afterwards anyways”. I said “Paul don’t you want to start off with the very best possible image to begin with, why fix it in the mix?  That’s just not my mentality on how I work, you have to get everything as perfect as possible to start with. When I get hired by an art director, they come to me because they know what I can do and that they will have that much less work and time involved in Photoshop”.

PHOTOS: Steel Panther @ Soundwave Festival Week

02 March 2012
Showgrounds, Melbourne, Australia

Well, what can one say about Steel Panther…having seen them back in 2007 in Los Angeles and Las Vegas when they were formerly known as Metal Skool, I knew exactly what to expect when they brought it down under!  In Melbourne they played a “Sidewave” show with Alter Bridge, then there was the actual festival performance at Soundwave and I shot them at both.  As far as photographing bands go…why couldn’t every band be as fun and easy to photography as these guys?  Perfect lighting, color, an encyclopaedia full of rock moves and everything in between, if you are lucky, you will even get boobies!!  With about 10 minutes of talking in between the 2nd and 3rd song, we definitely got ample time to shoot these guys…but alas, I didn’t quite manage to capture that Michael “Starr” jump at either show, but you want Satchel guitar solos, got them covered….

PHOTOS: Incubus @ Festival Hall

07 February 2012
Festival Hall

So the last band I took photo’s of was Incubus a few weeks ago now, yeah I know, I’ve taken a while to post up on here!
Never had experienced shooting songs 4,5,6 before, instead of 1,2,3…so that was a new one!  Had the opportunity to interview Jose’ from Incubus the following day forwww.maytherockbewithyou.com and asked him why that was, but you’ll have to read that interview to find out!!
They’re not my best work, but you might find something to enjoy!

Anyways, check out the photo gallery right here….http://www.lensofrock.com/galleries/incubus/

Upcoming Shoot: Big Day Out 2012

So after doing my first ever couple of outdoor festivals last year, namely Soundwave and Sweden Rock, 2012 kicks off with Big Day Out on January 29th here at Flemington Racecourse!  Certainly a bit of an eclectic lineup, which should make for… some interesting and varied photo opportunities!  Probably most excitedly, I will FINALLY get to shoot The Living End after many previous unsuccessful attempts.

Stay tuned for the photo’s in a few weeks…

After two weeks in the front bar, Juke Kartel headed onto the main stage at The Espy for the third show in Melbourne on their “Freeway Tour”. Road testing a bunch of new tracks and a re-invigorated sound courtesy of the introduction of new band member guitarist/keyboardist AJ.
It was a stellar nearly 100 minute set, also featuring a random guest appearance from Lifehouse bass player Bryce Soderberg.
